4. Negotiate with your bank

Most of the time, lenders will want to steer you to refinance your loan, but by the time you’re a few payments behind, you probably do not qualify for a reduction in the interest rate.

You have to work diligently to negotiate with a bank. Endurance. Tenacity. Self-discipline. You have to have them all in order to get through all the red tape. Don’t sabotage yourself by being impolite. Ask for help from everyone you speak with, but don’t sound distressed. Explain your situation, offer supporting documents, and reassure the lender that you want to live in your property for the long term.

If this is, in fact, a short-term situation and do not want to give up your property, most lenders would be willing to work with you. If you only missed a handful of payments, and want to keep your house, then sometimes the loan provider will just add the missed mortgage payments back onto your loan. In the long run, your lenders will more than double their cash outlay, so just ask and they’ll want to work it out with you. If they have to sell your house at a foreclosure auction, they’ll take an enormous loss.

If a banker can say no to someone like you who needs their assistance, then obviously they have forgotten how their business turns profits and just need a little help remembering.
