Call your lender. You’ll learn that nearly all of them have some sort of assistance for this very issue. It’s going to be tough and take a lot of work… but you may be able to get your interest rate reduced and/or temporarily reduce or temporarily stop your bank loan payments.

The most common approach the lenders will take is to have you refinance, but just as an FYI, by the time you are a few bank loan payments behind you probably won’t qualify for an interest rate reduction.

Negotiating with the bank is like running a marathon, after a marathon, after an iron man. Usually, it takes lots of calls and the patience to watch concrete dry to get through the bureaucracy. Do not sabotage yourself by being rude. Try not to come across as frantic, but try to get as much help from anyone in a position to help as possible. Explain your situation, offer supporting documents, and reassure the bank that you want to live in your house for the long term.

If this is genuinely a short-term situation and doesn’t want to give up your house, most lenders will be willing to work together with you. Playing catch up. Essentially if you’ve only missed a couple of payments, sometimes your mortgage company will just tally your missed payments back onto your balance. It is all about the bottom line with them, so remind them that you need their patience to give them a lot more money over the long run. Banks aren’t in the habit of losing money, so they are incredibly hesitant to foreclose on your house… they would take a substantial loss. They do not want to do it.

You would think that this is common sense, but bankers routinely get caught in the passion of the circumstance and neglect that. Simply put…Remind them.
